The conversation about ChatGPT has led to some welcome reflections about student assessment – an integral part of the learning process.

I am not convinced that single, high-stake exams or the setting of the same narrowly focused essay topics semester after semester constructively and comprehensively measure genuine learning and support student development.

Assess Students ‘Deep’ Learning

There are better ways to determine if students have demonstrated ‘deep’ learning. Some disciplines have already embraced these ways while others are sadly lagging.

Assessment types should encourage active learning, problem-solving, analytic thought and also allow students to use their initiative and demonstrate imagination. They should validate students’ sound knowledge and understanding of a topic or area of learning and confirm that the work they present is their own.

Ask students to:

  • create a Model/Artwork
  • produce a YouTube video
  • design a Webpage
  • conduct an interview to gather data and/or perceptions about a topic
  • engage in a Viva voce or oral exam
  • participate in Role Play
  • construct a novel poster.

Have them keep an evidence-based portfolio in which they detail how they have developed requisite knowledge, skills and understandings and achieved the learning outcomes; record their thoughts and insights about their learning experience and provide a self-evaluation of their performance.

Support Learning and Help Students to Advance.

The instructor’s role is to provide a valuable, relevant learning environment in which students are fully engaged in their learning. Whatever the method of assessment used, it should support that learning and help students to advance.
